Overview  

New Musical Theatre Actor Training gives actors the skills and experience to contribute meaningfully to the development of new musical theatre. Working with professional directors, writers, composers, and music directors, participants will explore songs, scenes, and scripts at various stages of creation. The program focuses on integrating acting and singing choices, learning music efficiently, approaching cold reads with confidence, and adapting to changing material. 

Through text and music analysis, practical rehearsal tools, and workshop experience, actors will develop bold, specific choices and practise offering clear, constructive feedback to creators.

Description

This is an intensive, studio-based program for performers who want to build the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to the development of new musical theatre. Working in a collaborative environment with professional directors, writers, composers, and music directors, participants will explore material at different stages of creation.

Program content includes:

  • Acting through song and integrating vocal and dramatic choices.
  • Learning new music quickly and efficiently.
  • Text and music analysis.
  • Cold reading and workshop presentation skills.
  • Adapting to rewrites and evolving material.
  • Offering clear, constructive feedback to creators
  • Collaborating effectively in a new-work rehearsal room

Through scene work, song exploration, readings, and informal presentations, participants will gain practical experience navigating the demands of developing new musicals while refining their artistic voice as performers.

Requirements

This program is intended for emerging and early-career actors and musical theatre performers who want to strengthen their skills in the development of new work.

Applicants should have:

  • Previous acting or musical theatre training, or equivalent professional experience
  • Strong foundational acting skills
  • Confidence singing in a rehearsal and workshop setting
  • The ability to learn music and text independently
  • An interest in new musical theatre and collaborative creation
  • Openness to experimentation, rewrites, feedback, and ensemble-based work

Applicants do not need extensive experience developing new musicals but should be prepared to work at an intensive, professional level. No specific degree or formal credential is required.

Participants must be available to attend all elements of the program for its entire duration; variable participation dates will not be considered.

Eligibility

Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date. 

Domestic and international applications are welcome.

Visa Eligibility Information: 

  • Please note that Banff Centre programs do not meet the eligibility requirements for a Canadian Student Visa.
  • If you are accepted into our program, you must obtain a Visitor Visa to enter Canada. Accepted participants are responsible for identifying and complying with the immigration requirements to enter Canada as a visitor from their country of origin. If you require a Visitor Visa please check the current expected processing times well in advance of applying.

Banff Centre can respond to most dietary requests. In advance of your arrival, please contact Participant Resources if you have special dietary needs. A medical report from your doctor is required prior to arrival for any medical condition that warrants opting out of the Meal Plan.

Scholarships

We are pleased to offer a range of scholarships to support participants in our programs. 

  • Banff Centre Arts Scholarship
    Program participants receive a Banff Centre Arts Scholarship that covers the cost of tuition, plus a contribution towards accommodation and meals.

*Participant costs shown above reflect the cost after the scholarship has been applied. To be eligible for Banff Centre scholarship, please complete the Financial Aid section when uploading your supporting materials.

  • Canadian Indigenous Arts Scholarship 
    Canadian Indigenous Arts applicants receive a scholarship that covers the full cost of tuition, accommodation and meals.

Additional Funding

There are a limited number of Banff Centre Named Scholarships for eligible Canadian and International participants. No separate application is required, all eligible applications are automatically considered.

Tax Information

Banff Centre is a post-secondary institution in the province of Alberta. We are required to issue tax receipts for applicable financial assistance and awards received, and eligible tuition charged, as per the Income Tax Act and Canada Revenue Agency. Resume

A two-page resume or C.V. describing academic, professional, and other relevant experience.

Cover Letter

A one-page cover letter explaining why you are interested in this program and what you hope to achieve by attending it.

Portfolio

Please upload one video, no more than 5 minutes in total, containing:

  • an excerpt of a monologue from a contemporary Canadian play
  • an excerpt of a song from a musical written within the last 25 years.

Financial Assistance

Be sure to complete the Financial Aid question in SlideRoom to be eligible for the financial assistance.

Adjudication

Participants are chosen by an adjudication panel comprising of internal and external assessors. The selection criteria include:

  • Quality, originality and artistic merit.
  • Required skills and experience.
  • The potential for the applicant's work to benefit from the program.

Our programs are highly competitive with a limited number of places available. Applicants will be notified of their selection status as soon as the adjudication process is complete. Due to the high volume of applications individual feedback will not be provided.
