Mountains have always possessed the power to shape imagination. Their scale, solitude, beauty, and permanence invite us to listen differently—to the landscape, to one another, and to our own creative instincts. This program celebrates composers whose music has been profoundly influenced by geography and a sense of place, particularly the extraordinary landscapes of Canada. From the vast musical portrait of the nation found in Oscar Peterson’s Canadiana Suite to works inspired by the grandeur and spirit of the mountains, these compositions remind us that landscape can become more than a backdrop: it can become a creative force, transforming what an artist sees and experiences into sound. Woven throughout this musical journey is the enduring history of the trumpet and the legacy of its great masters, whose voices have resonated across every style of music—from classical and jazz to popular, folk, ceremonial, and contemporary traditions. The trumpet’s brilliance, versatility, and expressive power have made it a constant presence in the evolution of music, carrying the influence of generations of players into each new artistic landscape.
That relationship between place and possibility lies at the heart of the legacy of the Banff Centre. For generations, artists have come to the Canadian Rockies not simply to study or perform, but to imagine—to exchange ideas, take creative risks, and discover new artistic directions within one of the world’s most inspiring natural environments. This concert honours that remarkable tradition, connecting the music of composers inspired by geography with Banff’s enduring belief that creativity flourishes when artists are given the space to explore. It also celebrates the trumpet’s remarkable journey through musical history and the artists who have expanded its possibilities across genres and generations. Surrounded by mountains that have inspired generations before us, we celebrate both the Canadian landscape and the artistic legacies—of place, composition, and trumpet playing—that continue to shape the music of today.
